evolve celebrates Bike Month

Since 1956, May has been recognized as National Bike Month. Promoted by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB), National Bike Month is a chance to celebrate the joys of biking and encourage more people to try out a two-wheeled adventure.

At evolve, we advocate for safe and accessible mobility infrastructure for all. Cycling is a great option because it is affordable, produces low/no carbon emissions, and promotes health through physical activity. Part of our mission is to increase low- and no-carbon transportation options, including bike infrastructure, so that it is safe, enjoyable, and more people want to get on a bicycle. This is reflected in our office culture and our reporting—in order to maintain our carbon-neutral workplace, we regularly track the commuting and business travel patterns of our team. Biking is incentivized through office policies, but beyond our own mobility choices we are working to promote biking at a larger scale through planning, design, and consulting.

Our projects have promoted biking in a variety of ways:

  • We help buildings and developments obtain a LEED credit for Bicycle Network.
  • Our planning work has prioritized Environmental Justice communities and equitable access to trail networks for neighborhoods impacted by disinvestment and infrastructure like railways and highways that hinder mobility and accessibility.
  • We also provide strategy and engagement support to nonprofits who advocate for human-centered biking, walking, and low-impact transportation as well as public agencies working to better incorporate bike and pedestrian communications and amenities in their networks.

In addition to the hardware and physical infrastructure of connected bike trails, it is also important to highlight the software, or person-centered, approach to celebrating cycling. Social events make joining in on the joys of riding a bike fun and allow people to take pride in their two wheels. The League of American Bicyclists has a Bike Month Guide that makes it easy to get involved at whatever biking comfort level you are at.
