About evolve environment :: architecture

evolve environment :: architecture (evolveEA) is a mission-driven design, planning, and sustainability firm working at the intersection of infrastructure, community, and environment. As a carbon-neutral, woman-owned (WBE) practice and certified B Corp and Just organization, we integrate equity, resilience, and systems thinking into projects ranging from urban design and mobility planning to infrastructure, policy, and implementation.

We are a small, collaborative practice. Our staff work across disciplines, scales, and phases, and we value team members who are adaptable, curious, and comfortable wearing multiple hats as project needs evolve.

Position Overview
evolveEA is seeking a mid-career Project Manager (Mobility & Urban Design) to support and help manage planning, urban design, and infrastructure projects. This is a hybrid role that blends design and planning production, mobility-informed analysis, and project management, and is suited for a professional with a minimum of 5 years of experience.

This position requires someone who can:

  • Think spatially and visually
  • Apply mobility and infrastructure concepts in design contexts
  • Manage project tasks, schedules, and coordination
  • Shift between design-leaning and planning-leaning work as workload demands

The role includes responsibility for coordinating and contributing to the production of design documents, presentations, and reports across project phases. The ideal candidate brings design sensibility along with project management capacity to keep projects moving forward in a small-firm environment.

Role within the Mobility & Planning Studio

The Project Manager (Mobility & Urban Design):

  • Works with a high degree of independence
  • Manages defined project scopes or workstreams
  • Coordinates closely with Project Managers, Studio Leads, and consultants
  • Supports junior staff through guidance or informal mentoring
  • Contributes to shaping project approaches, not just executing tasks

This role is not siloed; responsibilities may shift between design, analysis, and project coordination depending on project phase and firm workload.

Core Responsibilities

Responsibilities in this role span project management, urban design/planning, and mobility design/planning, and will shift as project needs and workloads evolve.

Design & Analysis, & Project Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate urban planning, urban design, and mobility planning workflows (in 2D and 3D) across project phases, integrating design exploration, analysis, and implementation considerations across interdisciplinary teams
  • Guide the development of urban design concepts, diagrams, and 2D/3D visualizations, contributing directly as needed while ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with project goals
  • Manage and contribute to the production of design documents, presentation materials, and written reports, ensuring clarity, coordination, and timely delivery
  • Oversee, synthesize, and apply spatial, urban, and mobility analyses using GIS and design-based analytical tools to inform planning and design decisions
  • Translate technical, policy, and analytical information into clear, accessible graphics and narratives for client, stakeholder, and community audiences
  • Apply or coordinate computational, parametric, or scenario-based methods where appropriate to support analysis and design development
  • Establish and manage 2D and 3D workflows to support design exploration, analysis, and communication across interdisciplinary teams

Community Engagement Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and support community engagement activities, including meeting preparation, materials, logistics, and documentation
  • Participate in and, as appropriate, support facilitation of meetings, workshops, charrettes, and public presentations
  • Synthesize community input into actionable design, planning, and mobility insights that inform project direction and decision-making

Mobility & Infrastructure Responsibilities

  • Integrate multimodal mobility, access, safety, and equity considerations into urban planning and design workflows
  • Manage or lead mobility-related analyses at corridor, district, or site-specific scales, coordinating inputs and deliverables
  • Coordinate with engineers, planners, and other specialists to align technical analyses, design intent, and implementation considerations

Project Management, Coordination, & Enterprise Support

  • Manage assigned tasks or workstreams, including schedules, deliverables, and workflows across client, consultant, and internal teams
  • Assist with project scoping, fee development, schedules, and budget tracking> in coordination with Project Managers and Studio Leads
  • Coordinate with subconsultants and internal team members to maintain project momentum, alignment, and accountability
  • Contribute to proposal and interview materials, including graphics, narratives, resumes, and project descriptions

Required Qualifications

This role requires a blend of design skills, analytical thinking, and project coordination. Successful candidates will bring most of the following experience and capabilities.

  • Demonstrated experience managing project tasks or workstreams, including schedules, deliverables, and coordination across client, consultant, and internal teams
  • Proven ability to manage and contribute to the production of design documents, presentations, and written reports, ensuring quality, clarity, and coordination
  • Strong design sensibility and spatial thinking, with hands-on experience guiding or producing design and analytical work
  • Working proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite for production of client- and community-facing materials
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS and spatial analysis workflows, with the ability to interpret and apply analytical outputs to planning and design decisions
  • Experience supporting or managing mobility-, infrastructure-, or public-realm–related projects, including integration of multimodal and equity considerations
  • Ability to translate technical, policy, and analytical information into clear narratives and graphics for diverse audiences
  • Experience coordinating with engineers, planners, and other technical consultants
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills appropriate to a project management role
  • Ability to adapt across roles, scales, and project phases in a small, collaborative firm environment
  • in Architecture, Urban Design, Planning, Engineering, or a related field
(Equivalent professional experience may be considered)

Desired (Not Required)

The qualifications below are helpful for this role but not required; evolveEA supports ongoing learning and professional development.

  • Experience serving in a project management or deputy project management role on planning, urban design, or infrastructure projects
  • Experience with 3D modeling and visualization workflows (e.g., Rhino, SketchUp, Grasshopper, or similar), including coordinating 3D outputs across teams
  • Familiarity with street design, complete streets, TOD, or public-realm projects, particularly in urban or community-centered contexts
  • Master’s degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Planning, Transportation, or related field
  • Professional credentials (AICP, LEED AP, WELL AP, LFA, ENVISION, Passive House, RA)

What Success Looks Like

In the first year, success in this role means:

  • Effectively managing assigned project scopes or workstreams, including schedules, deliverables, and coordination across client, consultant, and internal teams
  • Delivering clear, coordinated design, planning, and mobility outputs with minimal rework and strong alignment to project goals
  • Demonstrating sound judgment in balancing design quality, technical inputs, schedule, and budget considerations
  • Translating complex technical, policy, and community input into coherent, actionable project direction
  • Contributing to high-quality community engagement and client-facing processes
  • Operating as a reliable project partner to Studio Leads and senior staff, helping keep projects moving forward in a small-firm environment
  • Demonstrating flexibility across design, mobility, and planning needs
