Daniel Klein and Jose Richard Aviles (University of Southern California) will lead a workshop:
THE POWER OF PLAY IN PLACE: Engagement Strategies for Building Community Power
Equitable, inclusive, and sustainable places depend on deep and meaningful engagement to give voice and ownership to their communities. The economic, social, and environmental challenges that our communities face today can feel impossible to address when some types of power are out of reach. In this workshop, we will explore the dynamics of power, and explain how building community capacity is crucial for elevating community power. We will evaluate placemaking scenarios to determine appropriate levels of engagement and set goals for an engagement plan. Using the Community Engagement Strategy Deck, we will learn ways to adapt mapping exercises, simulations, games, toolkits, and collaborations for impactful placemaking. We will use the power of play to imagine engagement plans that are impactful and culturally competent.
